Jeremiah 6:16 says, “Stand at the crossroads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths where the good way lies: And walk in it, and find rest for your souls.”

Learning to grow in your intimacy with God through ancient spiritual practices (or exercises).

  • The Prayer of Examen: a devotional exercise involving reflection.
  • Lectio Divina: a slow, prayerful digesting of God’s Word. Listening to God’s word with the ears of our hearts.

  • Self-examination & Confession: allowing the Holy Spirit to expose areas of darkness, captivity and sin.

  • Lamenting: expressing honest emotions to God when we are hurt, frustrated, confused, betrayed, overwhelmed, sad or disappointed.

Participants must have taken the Spiritual Disciplines I class in order to sign up for the Spiritual Disciplines II class. This class, which runs for four weeks, will teach participants about the following disciplines:

  • Prayer: Experiencing a deeper intimacy with God through the disciplines of centering prayer, scripture meditation, fasting prayer, journaling and SOAP (Scripture, Observation, Application and Prayer).

  • Worship, Adoration, Celebration and Thanksgiving (Eucharisteo): Learning to grow in your intimacy with God through personal worship, adoration, celebrating God’s blessings and cultivating a heart of gratitude.

  • Solitude, Sacred Rest, Submission and Service: Recognizing the need for finding solitude and rest, practicing the presence of God and discovering the joys in living a life of submission and service to God.

The practice of these rich disciplines is a lost art in today’s busy culture. Few Christians realize that despite busy schedules and increasing demands on our time, it is possible to enjoy these spiritual exercises as a means of growing in your intimacy with God.

Even in a world of constant activity, social media, and loud messages competing for your attention, etc., it is possible to “hear His voice”. But learning to linger, and to be comfortable with silence is a challenge for many of us. In order to truly hear from God, we must be willing to wait, stay a little longer and practice listening. We must also be willing to practice solitude. Solitude and silence are most needed if we desire to grow in our relationship with God. Embracing these disciplines will teach us how to connect with God on a more intimate level. To truly know that we have been in His presence!

God not only has a plan for your life, but He has a kingdom plan. “God never wastes anything. He would not give you abilities, interests, talents, gifts, personality and life experiences unless he intended to use them for his glory. By identifying and understanding these factors, you can discover God’s will for your life!”.

Ask yourself, “What’s the one thing that truly unleashes your strengths and passions for his glory?”

Let’s explore your answer to this question in the four week class! Class participants will be responsible for covering the cost of the book which is available on Amazon.

We can build our identity on our self-worth, on our ability to please others, or on the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ.

In this book study, we will do a deep dive into the reality of many of our lives. The reality that we are all hurt, emotionally, relationally and spiritually, but because we aren’t aware of the extent of our wounds, we can’t take steps toward healing and health. We often reason, that because we are Christians, we should exude an attitude of happiness and contentment in all things.

However, the Lord desires truth and honesty at the deepest level, and wants us to experience His love, forgiveness, and power in all areas of our lives. God’s love, expressed through His people, and woven into our lives by His Spirit and His Word can, over a period of time, bring healing even to our deepest wounds and instill in us an appropriate sense of self-worth.

When life hurts hard, we often feel pressure – from others and ourselves – to keep it together, suck it up, or pray it away. But Scripture reveals a God who meets us where we are, not where we pretend to be.

It’s time to end the pretending. It’s time to give yourself permission to lament – give voice to your hurt, your pain, your frustration, your disappointment, your grief. Those emotions you’ve kept inside and silenced for too long.

In No More Faking Fine, Esther Fleece reveals how to use God’s own language (lamenting) to draw closer to him as he leads us through any darkness into His marvelous Light. God understands our pain. He knows what it is to live with a broken heart. He also encourages us to know that there is a season for lament. Lament is not for a lifetime. While weeping lasts for the night, joy comes in the morning (Psalm 30:5).

In this four week class, we will read No More Faking Fine and learn ways to “set aside our performing, put away our expectations, and stop our striving.” We will allow God into those vulnerable places and connect with Him more intimately through the language of lament.

All participants will be required to purchase the book and the class will include a review of the chapters assigned each week as well as group discussion and life application.

Getting to the heart behind the behavior – the things your children do and say flow from their heart.

Book by Tedd Tripp
Taught by Cindy Gaskins

Classes are offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. AM and PM sessions are available.
Class dates and times are to be determined based on registrations.
Location: Life Resources Mt.Pleasant or North Charleston

In his book, Shepherding a Child’s Heart, Tedd Tripp discusses the importance of recognizing that the things your children do and say flow from their heart (“out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.” Luke 6:45) He offers a Biblically based approach to understanding how to better define and pursue your parenting goals. Tripp suggests that our culture has lost its way. Young people no longer respond to authority as they did a generation ago. Rather than cave in, however, Tripp encourages parents to return to the timeless principles of the Bible which offer hope and help in your parenting struggles.

Tripp describes effective ways to talk to your children as well as what to talk about. He outlines the shift that takes place in your parenting objectives as your child develops from infant to child to teen. He emphasizes the need to teach in all of those stages by precept and example. Common challenges like setting and maintaining healthy boundaries, motivating your children to do chores, complete their homework and participate in family activities are addressed in this book. His solid, trustworthy and Biblical approach to helping parents focuses on the unique and divine plan God has for your family. His book has become a staple in many Christian homes.

While this book provides parenting and training objectives for infancy, childhood and teenage stages, it’s primary focus addresses the elementary aged child. In addition to getting to the heart of the behavior, Tripp speaks to a child’s shaping influences and the importance of parenting with a “Godward Orientation”.

All participants will be required to purchase the book and the class will include a review of the chapters assigned each week as well as group discussion and life application.

Practical tools, insights and Biblical wisdom for helping parents navigate raising their teens in today’s culture.

In this constantly changing world of social media and technology , it is easy to lose sight of God’s plumb line and those parenting principles we set out to follow in the early years of parenting.  When our children show signs of anxiety and struggle with relationships, or appear to “check out” and show little motivation, we resort to fear based parenting.  Suddenly our boundaries are challenged, our approach to parenting is questioned and we lose our position of authority.

Cindy is passionate about coaching parents who are struggling with disciplining and raising teenagers in today’s culture. She has been married to her husband, Mike, for 36 years and they have four children ranging in age from 22 to 32.

All participants will be required to purchase the book and the class will include a review of the chapters assigned each week as well as group discussion and life application.
